Wrapped with Care: 5 Expert Tips for Wrapping Your Gift of Art with Care

You've carefully chosen the perfect art piece as a gift, having decided on framing or leaving it unframed. Now, you're faced with the question of how to beautifully present this precious gift. If you're wondering how to wrap art as a present, look no further. In this guide, I'll share my expert tips on wrapping canvas, framed art, and unframed art or art prints, ensuring your gift is as stunning on the outside as it is on the inside.

Step 1. Gather Supplies: Prepare your gift wrapping essentials, adjusting based on whether you're wrapping a canvas or framed art versus an unframed art or art print.

  • For canvas and framed art, secure a box that fits or is slightly larger, along with bubble wrap, tissue paper, or newspaper for protection.

  • For unframed art and art prints, ensure you have a protective clear sleeve, tissue paper, and two thin foam boards or cardboard pieces, one that fits the art and another slightly larger. Alternatively, consider using a mat with a backing included for added protection and elegance.

2. Secure and Protect:

For Framed Art and Canvases:

Find a well-fitted box that accommodates the art without putting pressure on the piece, preventing potential damage or displacement. Wrapping the box not only safeguards the artwork but also simplifies the wrapping process. In case you can't find an appropriately sized box, utilize bubble wrap, tissue paper, or newspaper to secure the framed art or canvas, ensuring it stays in place during transit or gifting.

For Unframed Art & Art Prints:

Prioritize placing the art in a protective sleeve, adding a layer of thin cardboard or foam board for secure packing. For enhanced protection, consider taping the art onto a slightly larger cardboard or foam board, creating a protective sandwich that guards against bent corners and damage during handling and transportation.

Pro Tip. Depending on the size of framed canvas or painting you may be able to get a free shipping box from your local USPS

Many artists, including myself, employ this proactive packaging method, ensuring your wrapping process is both efficient and hassle-free

To ensure the artwork is wrapped with the front facing upward, consider placing a sticker on the protective layer to mark the front of the artwork. This simple step can help you keep track of the correct orientation when preparing the art for wrapping.

Step 3 - Wrap with Care:

Place the artwork delicately face down on the wrapping paper and fold it over, creating a secure, cozy wrap. Use  tape to secure the edges. You'll find that after completing step 2 and ensuring the art is well-protected, the wrapping process becomes significantly smoother.

Step 4 - Add a Personal Touch:

Take this moment to convey the significance of your chosen art piece and why it resonates with the recipient. Share why this artwork embodies your thoughts of them, adding a deeper layer of meaning to the gift that they can cherish over time. This thoughtful addition can act as a heartfelt tag or be included alongside the art, making the gift all the more special and personal.
